Teaching is a medium to impart knowledge. From time immemorial, teachers have been working hard towards inculcating skills and subject knowledge in their students. However, in the current times’ traditional approach to teaching is constantly being replaced by innovative methods of fostering an engaging learning environment in classrooms. Now, one may ask, what is innovative teaching?
An innovative teaching method would mean conveying the same knowledge through new ideas and methods. It uses creativity and imagination to teach students the same concepts which are otherwise found difficult and cumbersome.

The Indian school education system comprises of three levels or stages. First is the elementary level or the primary level which comprises classes 1-8, next is the secondary level with classes 9-10 and finally the higher secondary level which includes class 11-12. The primary or the elementary level forms the foundation or base of education for the students. To address this issue and to formulate and spread innovative teaching strategies for elementary teachers, Sri Aurobindo Society launched a remarkable platform in the form of Zero Investment Innovation for Education Initiative (ZIIEI) in 2015. Examples of innovation in teaching and
Some examples of innovation in teaching and learning to address the problems at the elementary level are;
Learning through Games:
There is a natural tendency among children to learn better through activities and games. This innovative strategy can be applied to subjects like Mathematics and Science which otherwise seem difficult for students.
New Age Teaching Techniques:
Teachers have to constantly keep innovating new ways to make the learning process interesting and keep the children engaged. Recognition and appreciation lead to more engagement and interest in class activities.
Under this modern method of teaching, students desirous to participate can get themselves nominated. The students are then elected for the posts of Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Ministers, Deputy Ministers and members of committees of associated ministries. The selected members are then administered the oath to fulfill their responsibilities.

A dedicated teacher adopts a holistic approach to teaching and focuses on the all-round development of the children. The teacher ensures that a student is not only able to perform well in the class but can also conduct himself confidently in the outside world.
One such example is Venkateswaran, a teacher of the Government Higher Senior Secondary School in Thippampalayam village in Erode district of the state. The teacher, who has been part of the teaching fraternity for the last 15 years, said that he wants his students to develop knowledge and good values and succeed in professional as well as personal life.
Having attended the teacher orientation program under Zero Investment Innovations for Education Initiatives (ZIIEI), Venkateswaran was able to successfully implement the idea of Children’s Parliament.
“We had the first meeting of the cabinet in July 2018 and would be having the next one in the coming month. The children’s parliament has different departments, including health and hygiene, discipline and sports,” he said.
Venkateswaran said that he had heard of this type of teaching method but was not sure of how to implement it in the school until a ZIIEI instructor demonstrated the whole process for them.
The teacher said that there has been a tremendous change in the students’ learning outcomes in a short span of time.
“Students are more confident now, they have started expressing themselves and some are even able to bring out their leadership skills. Another benefit of this innovation is that children listen more carefully to their fellow mates than teachers, thus building harmony among students,” he said.
These modern methods of teaching are the requirement of the day. They help in breaking the monotony of the classroom and engage students in fun-filled activities. These innovative teaching strategies for elementary teachers remove the gap between teachers and students. The education system in India faces a twofold challenge. First, is the ever-increasing burden of curriculum on students, and secondly, the falling standard of education. In order to address these challenges, remedial measures were taken by the government of India in 1992 by constituting a committee under Prof. Yashpal. The committee submitted its landmark report on elementary education titled, ‘Learning Without Burden’ in 1993. It laid stress on making school education more joyful and meaningful. The solutions suggested by it have become a national guideline for schools to follow.
